Welcome to the next blog in our series, Interior Design: Best Tips to Decorate Your Home! We’re sharing all our best interior design tips to decorate your bedroom—one of our favorite rooms of the house. This space, if well designed, can become a sanctuary for you to rest and rejuvenate. It can help you wake up every morning feeling refreshed and ready for whatever comes your way, just by taking a few simple steps to freshen up your bedroom.
When you're in your bedroom, you should feel happy and peaceful. Your bedroom should be a place where you can relax and rest. To evoke all those wonderful feelings, your space should feel like you. That is why our #1 design tip to decorate your bedroom is to stay true to you by staying true to your design style.
If design principles like balance, rhythm and repetition, contrast, and proportion, are well thought out, your bedroom will come together in a cohesive way no matter what design style you choose. Unsure what style is your favorite? Check out Interior Design Styles: A Guide to the 14 Most Popular Types. If none of those feel like you, that’s OK too. Show your designer a few decor items or design elements you like, and they can help you figure it out!
Rhythm and repetition is the idea of creating movement and harmony throughout your space with recurring patterns, colors, and different elements. Repetition can be achieved by subtly repeating lines or textures. Or, you can create more bold repetition through symmetry. Mirroring one side of the bedroom to the other side with matching end tables and accessories, along with bed decor and headboards, provides a calming aesthetic to a modern bedroom.
There is nothing cozier or more relaxing in your bedroom than a layered bed! And the best part is, there is no right or wrong way to layer your bed. All you need is to have a few basic elements in place to create your layered masterpiece—your favorite cozy sheets, a comforter or duvet, decorative pillows, and a throw blanket (or two). Layering your bed is also a perfect opportunity for you to get creative by testing out different patterns, textures, and colors. A romantically designed space can look different for everyone. Ultimately, that romantic look can be very invigorating, and comes from choosing the right lighting, colors and accent pieces for your style and personality. One great way to do this is by styling your bedroom in a soft, neutral color pallet—cream, beige and soft pinks or pale peach—to give the space even more of a romantic, rosy feel. When it comes to accent pieces, try incorporating black elements, natural wood, fresh flowers, and sparkling lighting.
One of the most understated design concepts is properly scaled and proportioned artwork. Scale and proportion, two very common interior design terms, are what make a home or room warm and inviting. Oftentimes artwork is either too small or not the right orientation for wall space. Our pro tip is this: measure your wall space available, or better yet, tape out a possible art size on the wall to see how it feels.
In the bedroom we designed above, the bird prints work well in a fairly large size because the images themselves already have a lot of negative space. While these images generously fill the wall space, they still feel simple and thus create that peaceful feeling we were going for in this serene bedroom.
While this tip can be used in any room of your house, coupling a dark accent wall with a lot of white space can really set a dramatically sexy mood for your bedroom. Painting an accent wall in your bedroom can help you achieve the dreamy, dark effect without zapping all the light from your space. The accent wall can become the main focal point of your bedroom. It can be used to reinvent an otherwise stale space, and create a modern, sleek look.
Our last tip to decorate your bedroom is to tie everything together using an area rug or an accent rug, and window treatments.
A good area rug can serve as the focal point of your space or simply create a soft and inviting foundation that anchors your bedroom furniture. Area and accent rugs can provide a pop of color, tie colors throughout the room together, help balance your bedroom, or even add a little texture.
Go a step further and finish off your space with window treatments. We love this analogy—Window treatments are like the jackets of interior design: They're often the last thing you add, but they can dress a room up or down. How true is that? Window treatments can make a room seem bigger, cozier, fancier, more modern or romantic…the list goes on. They can also add privacy or block out light, usually a much-needed functionality in a bedroom. Bottom line: don’t skip the window treatments (drapes, curtains, shades and blinds)—they might be the finishing touches you need to really transform your space and tie all your other design elements together!
